Nine Australian men have been charged after police raids smashed a multimillion dollar drug empire that spanned two states.


Organized Crime Squad leader Det. Supt. Arthur Katsogiannis said more than 200 officers simultaneously raided homes in Sydney and in Mildura, Victoria, at dawn Wednesday and seized millions of dollars worth of drugs, including amphetamines and steroids, as well as drug manufacturing equipment, firearms and ammunition.

 

Katsogiannis said they arrested "the main players" of the drug empire, all of them of Italian descent.

 

He said they had a a mafia-like structure and were "prepared to do anything to ensure their criminal activities."

 

Katsogiannis said the police operation began last July. Investigations are continuing.
