Latest News > 15 July 10 - Scrap 'no-brainer' guidance for police

LONDON Assembly member James Cleverly has said much of the guidance handed out to Met Police officers should be put on the bonfire.

He is urging London Mayor Boris Johnson to get rid of many of the the items in the 6,497 pages of guidance issued to officers.

Among the examples Mr Cleverly cited were advice on how to use handcuffs, how to get off a bicycle quickly and advising officers dealing with mob violence that “missile throwing could certainly consitute threatening behaviour”.

Mr Cleverly, who represents Bromley and Bexley, said: “Keeping abreast of these guidance notes is a distraction for officers and frankly an insult to their intelligence.

“I’m calling on the Mayor to have the no-brainer guidelines struck out.”
