Notetaking is an essential skill that is vital to any investigation. These notes could become vital evidence in subsequent proceedings, such as criminal trials in Magistrates or Crown Courts or at tribunals such as Employment Tribunals.

Our workshop aims to provide delegates with all the essential knowledge and skills need to make professional notes. It is suitable for those who are new to notetaking and also delegates looking to refresh their knowledge and skills.

The workshop will provide advice on how to make clear, intelligible, and accurate notes. It will consider how to collect, write and if necessary, give evidence in legal proceedings based on the quality and accuracy of their notes.

9.30am-9.40am: Welcome and introduction, Carol Jenkins, The Investigator
9.40am-10.40am: Session One: Introduction to the essentials of notetaking.
This session will introduce delegates to the issues of notetaking. It will examine the purpose of taking notes and when to take a note. This session will also examine whether notes should only be made in official notebooks or whether they can be made on other documents or even using technology and some of the issues to consider in these circumstances.
10.40am-11am: Break
11am-11.40am: Session Two: Benefits of effective notetaking
This session will look at the benefits of taking and making notes and how this can reflect on the professionalism of the note taker. It will look at specific situations when a note should be kept and what should be included, and it will look at the issues when making joint notes.
11.40am-11.50am: Questions from the morning’s sessions
11.50am-12.20pm: Break
12.20pm-1.10pm: Session Three: The Principles of notetaking
This session will examine the principles of note taking and keeping a notebook. It will cover the specific Do’s and Don’ts of note taking to ensure the integrity of the note. This session will look at the difference between fact, opinions, and inferences so that note takers are clear as to what can be included in their notes.
1.10pm-1.20pm: Break
1.20pm-2pm Session Four: At the Court or Tribunal
The final session of this event will examine the issues to be considered when seeking to use a note when giving evidence at court or tribunal The session will consider whether notes must have been made contemporaneously and the importance of the note in the evidential process.

Our expert trainer
The day will be led by expert trainer and Adrian Ramdat, a former investigator who spent over 26 years working operationally at a local, regional, national and international level in various covert roles and investigative roles.
He now trains and lectures investigators in the UK and across the world in covert investigations and investigative practice.
