SIOs and Digital Investigation event hailed a success

Operational officers joined with leading experts to debate current challenges and opportunities around the digital challenge at the latest in the Investigator’s best practice event.

The SIOs and Digital Investigation Conference and Exhibition was held at West Midlands Police Conference Centre, Tally Ho, Birmingham on 30 January 2018.

Delegates came from a good cross section of forces including West Midlands, Lancashire, South Wales, Kent and Essex, West Mercia and Greater Manchester as well as the College of Policing, Home Office and the National Crime Agency.

Speakers were operational officers who shared best practice with their colleagues about unique digital projects. PC Graham Attwood from Devon and Cornwall spoke about his project to launch the UK’s first digital media investigation dogs. He was approached by a number of forces who are running live investigations that they thought would benefit from using the dogs.

DS Dave McCormack from Norfolk Constabulary spoke about another unique project – a mobile triage van that the force uses to attend crime scenes and triage digital devices instead of seizing the goods and taking them back to the station. This saves valuable time and money.

PC Adrian Bacon & DC Dave Hammersley from the West Midlands Police Central DMI unit spoke about how DMIs can provide expertise to an investigation. They used the example of a hoax threat that was received by local police. DMIs used their expertise to help trace the hoaxer who was brought to justice.

DS Tim Farrell from Dorset Police gave a presentation about a live case called Operation Impala that involved the use of covert digital tactics.

Companies who took part in the day included Cellebrite, Sytech, Nuix, Chorus, WPC Software, Kinesense, JTOL, Forensic Analytics, Magnet and Cyan.

“The aim of the events is to bring together UK investigators and industry experts and to promote best practice in this ever challenging area,” said Carol Jenkins, editor of The Investigator.

“We have some really positive feedback from delegates and companies about the day and we’re delighted with how well it went. We’re now looking forward to the next event in June.”
