Two workshops that provide an operational insight into using Open-Source techniques to navigate the Chinese internet.

The first session is an introductory session, and the second session is an advanced session for those who already have some experience navigating the Chinese internet. You can book one or both sessions.

 

Introduction to OSINT searching the Chinese internet, 9 December 2026

The workshop will provide investigators and analysts with an introduction to navigating the Chinese internet. It includes key language concepts, Chinese characters, and transliteration.

The workshop covers typing and working with Chinese digitally, building Chinese search keywords, effective web-search strategies, and understanding Chinese naming conventions for finding people online.

 

Aims, and learning outcomes

On completion of the workshop, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the main characteristics of the Chinese language and learn how to search in Chinese online

  • Tackle the problem of translation and transliteration

  • Navigate the Chinese internet with greater confidence

  • Find specific content in Chinese (news reports, documents, etc)

Our expert

Skip Schiphorst is an Open-Source Intelligence language instructor at I-Intelligence GmbH, a commercial intelligence consultancy based in Switzerland. Skip served for 17 years in the Dutch Marine Corps. He deployed to several regions, during which his language and cultural skills were used to include Chinese, French, Spanish as well as Arabic.

Skip holds a university degree in China Studies from Leiden University, studied in the People’s Republic of China as well as Taiwan and develops and manages courses that help online researchers as well as cyber investigators find content online in Chinese, Arabic as well in other foreign languages.
