Our exclusive workshop will provide contemporary best practice to help maximise the investigative opportunities of Wi-Fi date in digital investigations.

It will be operationally focussed to help inform your investigations. The workshop aims to build skills and confidence as well as address any misconceptions, challenges and pitfalls.

Outline of the day

Session One: Wi‑Fi Fundamentals

  • Understanding how Wi‑Fi works, the devices and networks involved, and the types of data that are generated in everyday usage.

 

  • Introducing key concepts like SSIDs, MAC addresses, and signal behaviour in an investigative context.

 

Session Two: Requesting IP Addresses

  • How to request, use, and interpret data when your subject of interest is connected to Wi-Fi.

 

  • A look at what indicates that they are connected to Wi-Fi and how Wi-Fi can trick you to thinking a phone is switched off.

 

Session Three: Using Wi‑Fi Effectively in investigations

  • Practical guidance on assessing Wi‑Fi evidence, avoiding common pitfalls, and integrating Wi‑Fi data with other investigative sources.

 

Our speaker

Fenella Wheatley is an accredited communications data investigator who has worked for the Met Police and is currently working for the National Digital Exploitation Service (NDES) as a Band C CCTV Investigations Manager.

 

She has also delivered training courses to investigators and analysts in a number of law enforcement organisations.

 

She is the author of published work on Stop and Search Proportionality, Crime Mapping Analysis in Greater Manchester – Awarded Q-Step Award for Quantitative Analysis.
