This workshop introduces key skills and concepts in Criminal Network Analysis. It covers the goals, tools, and concepts of Criminal Network Analysis and explores its application to identifying central individuals and structural crime patterns.

It also examines the use of Criminal Network Analysis to tackle violence, from the focused deterrence approach to more recent developments in the UK context.

Aims/Objectives of the day

  • Understand what criminal network analysis is and how it can be applied in policing

  • Apply CNA to identify central individuals and structural crime patterns

  • Grasp the relational principles behind violence reduction approaches and the role of network-based risk factors

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Think relationally and ask relational questions in their work

  • Understand what CNA does and how it can be integrated into policing practice

  • Interpret network analysis outputs and operational products

  • Develop network analysis-informed interventions

 

Our expert speaker – Paolo Campana

Paolo Campana is Professor of Criminology at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge. His work specialises in criminal networks and organised crime.

He has explored issues related to gangs, organised crime and criminal governance, drug markets, migrant smuggling, and the use of technology in human trafficking.

His work has appeared in leading international journals and has been translated into Chinese, French, and Italian.

He is passionate about translating research into actionable solutions and fostering strong engagement with practitioners, both domestically and internationally.
