Investigating Financially Motivated Sextortion and Coercive or Sexually Motivated Sextortion, 18 November 2026

Our workshop provides a contemporary snapshot and exploration of the two sextortion crimes - Investigating Financially Motivated Sextortion and Coercive or Sexually Motivated Sextortion. They are legally and functionally classified as different types of crimes, primarily distinguished by the perpetrators’ goals and the nature of the coercion.

It will be led by experts from the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and the NSPCC’s Childline who will provide the current threat picture, key trends and statistics, for these ever evolving and complex crimes.

Our workshop aims to shine a spotlight on the real and growing harms facing young people today.

Online sexual exploitation is now considered a global ‘hidden pandemic,’ affecting hundreds of millions of children each year - with sextortion being a significant and rapidly growing contributor.

This session will bring urgency and clarity to these issues - exploring how they differ, what they look like in practice, and equipping investigators and analysts with the knowledge and resources needed to recognise, respond and make a difference.

It will also provide a unique opportunity for investigators and analysts working in this complex and challenging field to engage with our experts and enhance and broaden their understanding of the current issues.

Outline of the Day

Session One: An introduction to the Internet Watch Foundation and Childline and their current role in preventing online child sexual abuse and exploitation

  • General summary of the current threat picture around all sextortion and its role in online crimes against children and young people.

  • Introduction to NSPCC’s Childline and a general summary of its role in supporting children and young people.

Session Two: Financially Motivated Sextortion

  • Contemporary issues and trends around Financially Motivated Sextortion, including insights into how and what young people report and why boys are particularly targeted.

  • Sextortion manuals: a deep dive into sextortion manuals. These are documents or guides created by perpetrators to outline methods for conducting online sexual extortion.

These materials describe tactics for deceiving individuals into sharing private, intimate content and then using that content to demand money or further favours through threats and blackmail.

They are often shared within online communities and often include information around: social engineering, manipulation techniques, extortion demands and advice on using digital tools to hide identities and process untraceable payments.

  • AI-generated nude imagery: a deep dive into the threat of AI generated nude imagery.

Session Three: Coercive or Sexually Motivated Sextortion

  • Contemporary issues and trends around Coercive or Sexually Motivated Exploitation, who are the victims? Who are the perpetrators? Where these images are likely to be found and sold online.

  •  A look at the tactics used by perpetrators and their motivations. We’ll look at who is most vulnerable and how they can be supported.

Session Four: Report Remove, Partnership working, how abuse occurs and relevant signposting

  • A focus on the Report Remove Service - that helps young people under 18 in the UK to confidentially report sexual images and videos of themselves and remove them from the internet.

  • Current partnership working. How it works and how it can help address these crimes – including valuable insights from the counsellors and the current harms affecting young people.

  • A look at how this type of abuse occurs and how it can escalate, the impact on young people’s wellbeing, how to spot the signs and how to talk to young people at risk. Resources and signposting.
