Current threats and challenges around Crypto-Wrench Attacks and crypto-related violence, 23 February 2026
The workshop considers issues around the growing phenomenon of Crypto-Wrench Attacks which refer to in-person violent attempts to force individuals to hand over access to their cryptocurrency.
Crimes are rising sharply across the world with incidents of physical violence in relation to crypto wrench attacks escalating. These attacks are still underreported due to fears around revictimisation.
They are also challenging to investigate as the crimes are committed in both the virtual and actual worlds. The crimes are committed by a diverse group of threat actors ranging from organised crime groups to friends and family.
World’s first research
Our workshop will provide a fascinating insight into Crypto-Wrench Attacks and will feature research findings from the world’s first ever study into the crime.
It will be led by report author Marilyne Ordekian from the Department of Computer Science, University College London, UK, who is an academic and lawyer. Marilyn will present her findings and offer comment and recommendations to help inform investigations.
The day will include:
-
An outline of the definition of a Crypto-Wrench Attack and the offences committed
-
Current threat picture and crime trends
-
A look at the threat actors and victims
-
An anatomy of a Crypto-Wench Attack
-
An assessment of future development of the crimes
-
A look at the role of law enforcement and issues around under reporting.
Who should attend?
