The Investigator is hosting the latest in our successful series of Digital Investigation Workshops that showcase latest updates on digital investigation technology.
It will be held online and will feature an impressive line-up of industry experts who will showcase latest innovation, product releases and their unique work.
They will use lives demonstrations to help explain how their products and services can have a real difference to the work of investigators and analysts on the frontline.
Each expert will be given a 40 minute speaking slot followed by time for questions.
The event will run from 10am till 3pm (GMT).
Our workshop will provide investigators and analysts with the opportunity to directly engage and network with the experts and also their peers.

Conducing effective investigations, key principles and best practice, 8 December 2025 - online workshop
Free to attend for investigators from public and private sector organisations and other regulatory bodies with an investigatory function. Workshop runs from 10am-2pm GMT
The Investigator is hosting a CPD Day with experts at The University of Sunderland that considers contemporary best practice around the role of the investigator and conducting effective investigations.
It is free to attend for all investigations who are working in public and private sector organisations and other regulatory bodies with an investigative function.
The day will consist of informative presentations and discussion and aims to provide you with key operational best practice around how to conduct a professional investigation within your relevant organisation.
The day will include:

Understanding your role as an investigator and your professional identity

An introduction to the investigative mindset and decision making

General principles of an investigation

Setting your strategy and planning activity

Conducting professional investigative interviews with witnesses and suspects
Importance of Continuous Professional Development
The day will also consider the importance of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in helping support your role and build skills.
It will showcase current CPD opportunities at the University of Sunderland and help sign post you to find out more about the courses that are available at the university.

Our expert speakers
Professor Gary Shaw, MBE, Professor of Professional Practice at the University of Sunderland
Gary was the National Police Chief’s Council /National Crime Agency National Investigative Interview Advisor where he led the efforts to implement the PEACE interview style into UK policing. He has provided interview advice in many of the major investigations over the past four decades. He was responsible for introducing the post of force interview advisors/champions and was at the forefront of investigative interview training.
Dr Emma Spooner, Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Applied Investigation course, University of Sunderland
Emma was an experienced investigator and a former Crime Investigation Support Officer in the Major Crime Investigative Support unit at the National Crime Agency, where she provided advice to investigators from police forces and wider law enforcement. She is the co-author of the book Dilemmas and Decision Making in Policing.
Steve Hibbitt, QPM, Programme leader on MA in Investigative Management at the University of Sunderland
Steve is the author of Blackstone’s Crime Investigator’s Handbook, is one of the UK’s most experienced and longest serving investigators.
He is an experienced PIP3 Senior Investigative Officer (SIO), trainer and lecturer and has served as Deputy SIO on Operation Resolve, the independent inquiry into the causes of the Hillsborough Disaster.
This is not aimed at investigators from police forces and wider law enforcement. it is aimed at other public and private bodies with an investigatory function.
