Innovative use of communications data: maximising digital opportunities, 5 November 2025

This workshop encourages investigators and analysts to think beyond traditional call data and explore the wider range of communications data available in today’s digital investigations.

This is a must-attend for those looking to stay ahead of evolving technology, develop their existing knowledge, and gain new skills in identifying and using modern communications data effectively and lawfully.

We’ll break down the misconception that phones only produce call data, and delve into other powerful sources such as IP addresses, showing how these can be used to build a fuller picture of an individual’s digital activity, associations, and location.

The workshop will focus on how to identify, obtain and interpret this broader set of communications data, and how to use it in a way that adds real value to an investigation. Throughout, we’ll reinforce the importance of carrying out your work in a legal, ethical and proportionate manner.

This session is a must-attend for any investigator or analyst looking to move beyond call data, unlock the value of emerging communications data, and adapt to the realities of today’s connected digital landscape.

The day will include best practice around:

  • Communications data goes beyond call data: why call data has become limited and why we need to explore further.

  • Phone data does not just mean call data: there is more on your phone than your calls and texts

  • IP Addresses: how to choose them and how to use them in your investigations
