Technology-Facilitated Abuse awareness training, 20 May 2025

The Technology-Facilitated Abuse and Economic Empowerment Team at the charity Refuge will lead this awareness training that considers contemporary trends, issues and best practice around technology-facilitated abuse.

The day will provide investigators with latest trends and best practice to enable them to carry out credible investigations and provide justice for survivors.

Technology-facilitated abuse is a growing threat, and new trends and behaviours are constantly evolving. Refuge runs The National Domestic Abuse Helpline and has a direct insight into current trends from the survivors themselves.

Refuge’s Technology-Facilitated Abuse and Economic Empowerment Team is a UK specialist service directly supporting survivors facing complex tech and economic abuse concerns.

Technology-Facilitated abuse involves the use of technology to control, harass or intimidate survivors. This could include compromising digital devices, cyberstalking, using social media, cameras and tracking devices designed to harm and control the survivor and their children.

Workshop content

What is technology-facilitated abuse? An insight into the definition of technology-facilitated abuse and how perpetrators can misuse technology.

We will include signposting to resources available to support survivors in securing their tech and numbers for survivors to call for help.

Current threat picture and emerging trends: A unique insight from the team around the current methods and ways in which perpetrators are using technology to harm and control their survivors.

This is constantly evolving and it’s essential that delegate have an up-to-date picture to help inform investigations. One of the most alarming trends is that perpetrators are using of-the-shelf and readily available stalker ware to track survivors.

Location-based issues: We’ll explore how a survivor’s digital footprint could reveal their location and compromise their safety.

We will provide advice around how victims can protect their location by working through a survivor’s journey to refuge and identifying

ways in which her location can be compromised along the way including: tracking using online accounts, purchases, devices left behind.

Advice to survivors: An overview of the advice that investigators can provide to survivors disclosing concerns of technology facilitated abuse to keep them safe while at the same time not making them feel isolated and removed from their lives and their friends and families.

We will share an insight around how survivors can gather evidence of technology facilitated abuse.

Current case studies: The team will highlight some recent examples directly from survivors around their experiences of Technology-Facilitated abuse, how they have been targeted by perpetrators and the advice they’ve been given to ensure their safety isn’t compromised by technology.

The day will be held online via Teams. Certificates of CPD are available.
